The advancement of cannabis technology is of utmost importance around the nation’s capital, where the DC, Maryland, and Virginia clientele all flock to get premium-grade cannabis.

To meet that demand, a Hagerstown, MD medical cannabis manufacturer recently announced the completion of a pharmaceutical-grade facility. District Cannabis, which provides premium cannabis for the DMV region, is now set to exceed Maryland’s growing medical requirement. Through the raising of $9.2 million in capital, a multi-phase project estimated to encompass more than 82,000 sq ft is in the plan. Phase One involves high-tech grow rooms, while Phase Two is set for late 2020. This proposed plan is expected to yield more than six times the production capacity of District Cannabis’ current facility.

The Maryland property will add an eighth location to the District Cannabis brand, which currently includes District of Columbia distribution locations on Blair Rd, NW; Connecticut Ave, NW; 8th St; N. Capitol St NW; Martin Luthur King Ave, SE; Sheriff Rd NE; and Rhode Island Ave, NW.

“Our approach, from the beginning, has been one rooted in science and is patient-centric,” District Cannabis co-founder and chairman Ed Weidenfeld said. “With the arrival of our new Maryland facility, we are able to expand our reach in the patient community and ensure that Maryland patients have access to medicine that adheres to the lofty standards that the medical cannabis community has come to expect.”

Weidenfeld and co-founder and CEO Andras Kirschner are no strangers to the cannabis industry, having cultivated a dedicated patient community since 2017. Weidenfeld found a home in medical marijuana after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease; he saw a link between the lessening of symptoms and marijuana use. From that point forward, he sought out opportunities, via pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, to improve the living conditions of those around him. Kirschner found his way into marijuana through a Bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Agriculture, an interest in public health, and the upkeep of an 80-acre organic vegetable farm. When he relocated to California, he built a warehouse cultivation facility that supplied the Bay Area dispensaries and collectives with medical-grade marijuana.

“Our approach, from the beginning, has been one rooted in science and is patient-centric. With the arrival of our new Maryland facility, we are able to expand our reach in the patient community and ensure that Maryland patients have access to medicine that adheres to the lofty standards that the medical cannabis community has come to expect.” – District Cannabis co-founder and chairman Ed Weidenfeld

Now, across the world, Weidenfeld and Kirschner are making a huge difference for those in the DMV through the Hagerstown facility. By late 2020, when the full facility is up and running, the entire District Cannabis team, as well as medical marijuana patients in the DC suburbs, will have something to look forward to.

“The City of Hagerstown is pleased to welcome District Cannabis/Maryland Cultivation and Processing, LLC to Hagerstown,” said Hagerstown Mayor Robert Bruchey. “The addition of this new company will not only create jobs, but as one that has a proven reputation in its industry, promises to be a good fit for our business community.”

This state-of-the-art facility is monitored closely not only by those who work within it but also by the city of Hagerstown on a monthly basis in order to maintain high-tech procedural upkeep and seed to sale tracking.
